Over The Counter Medications

There are a lot of over the counter acid reflux medications. These medications should all reduce any stomach acid an individual might encounter. They help neutralize the stomach acid. Antacids, like Tums, will neutralize the stomach’s acid. When an individual experiences an assault and gets heartburn, this medicine will offer the essential relief. Even though this medication offers relief, it doesn’t provide an ultimate solution for the heartburn.

There are other over the counter medications available. They prevent acid reflux attacks from happening. These particular medications are called: H2 Receptor Antagonists, or H2 Antagonists. Otherwise known as: Zantac, or Pepcid. To stop attacks from happening, an individual should take these daily. These medications provide an individual a smaller quantity of stomach acid. They may also stop, or eliminate acid reflux.

Prescription Medications

There are occasions when there are more serious conditions that cause acid reflux. GERD is one of those conditions. If that is true, Your physician may offer you a prescription for a stronger medication. This medication is available at your local drugstore. The first option given to you will likely be a protein pump inhibitor, protein as PPIs. The objective of these medications is to stop the acid from dispersing into your gut and intestines. Heartburn should also be eliminated. The feeling in your gut the acid causes should also go.

Another prescription medicine is pro-motility agents. This is also referred to as Reglan. This medication will hasten the process of stopping the acid  remaining in your stomach for a protracted period of time. It can only be obtained if H2 antagonists or PPIs don’t work.

Home Treatments

If you prefer to try other treatment options rather than medications, there are some home remedies that might help provide relief from the symptoms of acid reflux. These include: changes to your lifestyle, apple cider vinegar, baking soda, chamomile tea, carrots and ginger. Lifestyle changes could include: going to bed after a few hours after eating. This gives the body the opportunity to digest the food you consume. There’ll also be less likelihood of getting acid reflux during the night. If possible, consider raising the bed of your head a few inches. This can avoid acid reflux from occurring whilst you’re asleep. These remedies, a proper diet and a couple of relaxation exercises should be enough to keep you from receiving acid reflux.

Surgery

If acid reflux is extremely severe, an individual might need to have surgery. The surgery will repair the valve located between the stomach and the esophagus. It will stop the acid from getting into the esophagus. The name of the procedure is fundoplication. It’s performed by  an incision into the abdomen or by a laparoscope. Recovery may take a few days to a couple weeks depending on the process.
